Approaches to Physical Education
Physical Education Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement
Intent
At Crofton Juniors, our PE curriculum aims to provide the opportunity for all pupils to become more physically confident and have a positive relationship with movement and physical activity. By providing a broad and balanced curriculum with opportunities for all to enjoy, our Physical Education aims to develop students’ physical competence, confidence, and understanding of movement, while promoting the importance of lifelong health and well-being.
The PE curriculum is designed to be inclusive, engaging, and progressive, encouraging all students to participate actively, improve their fitness, and develop key values such as teamwork, resilience, fairness, and respect. We strive to ensure that every student leaves our school with the physical literacy, motivation, and knowledge necessary to make informed choices about healthy and active lifestyles
Our mission is to further improve and increase the quality and quantity of high-quality PE for all pupils, to show how PE can enhance pupils’ attainment and achievement and to create pathways for them to continue to be active outside of school and leave Crofton Juniors “Sport Ready”. We are continuing to develop our links with outside agencies and clubs which will help to generate positive interaction within the community.
Implementation
PE is taught twice weekly each half term, each year group has two different units of PE with the exception of Summer 2, which has a focus on Athletics.
Through the Get Set PE scheme of work, we have ensured that children will develop the skills needed to participate in a range of physical activities and sports. Units of work taught in Year 3 and 4 will be built upon, where appropriate, in Year 5 and 6 to ensure the children are progressively developing and mastering the skills and knowledge so that they know more, learn more and remember more.
Lessons will be differentiated where necessary to ensure that all children are being challenged, are successful and make progress within the units of work.
Impact
Impact of PE will be demonstrated through lesson observations and drop-ins, reference to the Get Set for PE assessment criteria and Chris Quigley Milestones and performance in both intra and inter school competitions.
As children progress throughout the school, they will develop their skills and deep knowledge of the different aspects of the PE curriculum, as well as developing their social, emotional and thinking skills. This ensures that they are well prepared for the next steps of their education.
All children will leave Crofton Juniors with an understanding about the importance of PE, physical activity and sport, understand how exercise affects the body and the risk factors associated with not leading a healthy, active lifestyle.
The impact of the curriculum is monitored through a combination of discussions with pupils and staff and lesson observations in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the quality of the curriculum and highlight areas for further development.
